O’Regans fined nearly $39k for fatal explosion

The family of a young man who died in an explosion at a Dartmouth body shop left a courtroom in tears after a judge handed down a fine to the company owners.

The Crown wanted O’Regan Chevrolet-Cadillac Ltd. to pay $150,000 for the 2008 explosion that killed Kyle Hickey, 22.

O’Regan’s pleaded guilty to charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in July.

But on Wednesday, Judge Pam Williams ruled there was no proof the safety shortcomings actually contributed to Hickey’s death and ordered the company to pay $38,750.

Crown Attorney Jim Clarke says the sentence was disappointing in ways.

Hickey’s friends and family left the courtroom looking visibly upset and did not speak to reporters.
