National Non-Smoking Week a good time to quit

It’s national non-smoking week and if you’re trying to quit – there’s no better time.

The Canadian Cancer Society of Nova Scotia is hoping smokers will recognize this week as the perfect time to kick the habit forever.

CEO Maureen Summers tells News 95.7 Nova Scotia has one of the highest smoking rates in the country at 20 per cent.

She says even though that number has been slowly declining over the years, it’s still too high.

“We still have lots of work to do; we would like to see the rates come down. The national average is 18 per cent currently, and a number of years ago there was a target of 12 per cent for 2011,” she said. “We’re certainly not close to that target.

Summers would like to remind everyone about the society’s smokers helpline.

“It’s been evaluated. It provides a lot of support for the individual and develops a ‘quit plan’ for them. We have staff who support the smoker who is trying to quit,” she said. “They’re available through text messaging, on the phone and through chat rooms.
