Halifax region Internet service provider files for bankruptcy

A company that received $1-million from the Nova Scotia government to provide Internet service to parts of the Halifax region is filing for bankruptcy.

Representatives for Omniglobe Networks Inc. of Montreal filed a notice Tuesday with the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada.

Company officials could not be reached for comment Friday.

A spokesman for the province’s Economic and Rural Development Department says the province is aware that Omniglobe is trying to restructure.

So far, the department knows of only five cases of service disruptions.

Omniglobe’s contract was to provide service to 1,300 civic addresses.

Department spokesman Toby Koffman says Omniglobe met all of the obligations in the 2008 contract and is therefore not subject to any penalties.
