Strike looms at Halifax seniors’ home

Workers at the province’s largest nursing home could go on strike this week.

Canadian Auto Workers members at Northwood Care voted 52 per cent against the company’s latest pay offer late last week.

The union represents 550 licensed practical nurses, care workers, dietary, environmental and maintenance staff, as well as beauty salon employees. Seventy-five per cent took part in the vote.

Jim Mott, a business agent with the union, tells CBC that officials will give 48 hours strike notice sometime this week.

Northwood spokesperson John Verlinden says in the event of a strike any programs not related directly to care will be cancelled.

He says the nursing home will fall back on non-unionized nurses, managers with a nursing background, volunteers and family members to fill in the gaps.
