Chicken ban should remain in HRM: report

A report from city staff recommends maintaining HRM’s ban on backyard chickens.

The report follows public consultation, surveys and research into urban chickens and says due to humane concerns, they shouldn’t be allowed on the peninsula.

Metro Halifax reports that a survey conducted in Feburary showed 84 per cent of respondents in favour of backyard chickens.

However, the staff report says standards need to be applied for proper coop design and basic care – and there’s no provincial legislation in place that allows HRM to enforce those rules.
