Gunplay-loaded weekend in metro

Bullets were whizzing through a front door, an apartment ceiling, between houses and on a street downtown corner in five separate shooting incidents across metro this weekend.

Five people face various weapons-related charges in connection with a single bullet blasting through the floor of an apartment and into the apartment below.

Police were called to the 100 block of Main Avenue at 9:36 p.m. Saturday when a resident reported there was a shot through her ceiling.

“It appears one gunshot bullet entered that residence, just one,” Staff Sgt. Darrell Gaudet told News 95.7. “Five parties have been charged and it appears four were arrested at the scene.”

A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy will be in a Halifax court Monday facing careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon and other weapons-related charges. Three women have also been charged with weapons offenses and will appear in court at a later date.

In a separate incident, police are still trying determine the facts which lead to a 17-year-old boy showing up at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg at 3:40 a.m. Saturday. The teen has been treated and released.

Members of the Integrated General Investigative Section are conducting interviews in an attempt to determine what happened and where the incident took place.

Later Saturday morning, Tantallon RCMP received a call of several shots being fired in Timberlea around 4:30 a.m.

Shots were reported coming from behind a residence on Governors Lake Drive and then later from a home on Power Terrace. While police were responding, there was a two-vehicle crash near 1215 St. Margaret’s Bay Road.

The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles fled the scene and ran into the woods. Police seized a firearm from their vehicle.

There were minor injuries when a woman was shot in the face and a man in the shoulder with BB pellets. It happened at the corner of Quinpool Road and Oxford Street at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. The woman told police she believed a suspect shot from a passing vehicle.

In Halifax, a woman discovered a bullet hole in the front door of her apartment in the 3000 block of Romans Avenue. Police were called at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, but neighbours said they heard what sounded like a gunshot between 10 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

A bullet and shell casing were recovered. Police said, based on the preliminary investigation and information gathered, this does not appear to be a random act.
