Walmart has announced a $750 million expansion throughout Canada that will include three new stores in Nova Scotia.
A representative from the retail giant tells the Herald that Zellers stores in Cole Harbour, Greenwood and North Sydney will be reopened as Walmart this year or early in 2013.
The surge comes at the same time as a planned expansion of Target retail stores into Canada. The U.S. retailer purchased most of the Zellers’ leases from Hudson Bay Co. early in 2011 for $1.8 billion, with plans to rebrand the discount department stores.
Walmart has not confirmed when construction will begin on any of the new stores.
They do confirm that half of the new stores will be “supercentres,” which have a full grocery department in addition to the usual assortment of household goods and electronics.
The company says the nationwide expansion will create 14,000 jobs and add 4.6 million square feet of retail space.
Walmart currently has 333 stores across Canada, including 164 supercentres.
