Teachers protest at NDP MLA offices

Teachers took to the sidewalks in front on NDP MLA offices all across Nova Scotia Friday afternoon to protest what they call an assault on the education system.

The teachers fanned out with signs and chants to Darrell Dexter’s office in Cole Harbour, Bill Estabrooks’ in Lakeside, Graham Steele and Howard Epstein in Halifax, even protesting outside the office of Education Minister Ramona Jennex in New Minas.

“We’ve all just had it,” said NSTU president Alexis Allen. “Parents have had it, kids have had it, teachers have had it. We cannot continue having cuts like we’re getting and expect to do better. It’s just impossible.”

Allen says the NDP government’s assertion that the cuts are because of declining enrollment only makes up one-third of the cuts. She says the other two-thirds are just because of budget cuts.
