The lights turn red and the cars stop, but the fun is just about to being as pedestrians take off in every direction.
A “scramble crosswalk,” allowing people to cross an intersection from all directions, including diagonally, is being proposed for the corner of Spring Garden and Queen Street in Halifax.
The Chronicle Herald reports The Spring Garden Area Business Association has asked the Halifax Regional Municipality to put in the crosswalk after the new library is completed in 2014.
“Scramble crosswalks” are believed to be safer for people crossing than regular crosswalks, and they’re already very popular in a lot of large cities around the world.
Toronto already has several free-for-all crosswalks and Vancouver is also looking at using them at its most dangerous intersections.
