Bloomfield Centre takes another step forward

The next step in the six-year-long redevelopment of the Bloomfield Centre will take place tonight.

Municipal officials will provide an update on the plan to redevelop the multi-use facility during the Imagine Bloomfield annual general meeting.

The process began when the community learned the property would eventually be sold.

“We took a very proactive stance on that and started negotiating the work and leading the ground work to make sure that when the place does get redeveloped it would be developed wisely and based on the community’s needs,” Adam Barnett, community outreach facilitator, told News 95.7.

Spearheading the development project was a conscious effort to avoid situations like the one which arose around the former St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School building which is now the subject of a legal battle between the community, the city and the developer.

Barnett said Bloomfield is currently used by about 500 user groups, from seniors clubs to sports teams. He said that’s why the centre is so important to the North End, and why the development must continue to meet the community’s needs.

“The idea of diversity, the idea of having a green space, the idea of having a green building,” said Barnett.

The city is expected to explain the status of the request for proposals to develop the center.

The results of a survey on future tenants is also being released tonight as well as a look at other types of developments across the country that are similar to the group’s vision for the space.

Tonight’s meeting is at the Bloomfield Centre on Agricola Street at 6 p.m.
