Nova Scotia fire marshal’s office bans flying lanterns, saying they pose hazard

The fire marshal’s office in Nova Scotia has banned flying lanterns.

Acting fire marshal Harold Pothier says the lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, pose a fire hazard.

The lanterns use an open flame to float through the air, but Pothier says they typically don’t have steering features to keep the fire contained and ensure they land safely.

He says his office has seen several cases where fires appear to have been started by the lanterns, adding that the risk is greater in the summer.
