Raw sewage is flowing into Halifax Harbour after a electrical problems at a pumping station downtown.
Coun. Dawn Sloan (Halifax Downtown) confirmed there is a malfunction at the Pier A pumping station at Barrington and Inglis streets.
The failure has caused the shutdown of the pumping stations at Point Pleasant Park and the Atlantic School of Theology, and now all three stations are allowing raw sewage to pour into the harbour.
Coun. Sue Uteck (Northwest Arm – South End) told the Chronicle Herald the pier station was flooded Wednesday because of electrical problems and that the water had to be pumped out. This created an unpleasant odour downtown.
There’s no word as to when the station will be operational again.
Uteck told the paper, Dexter Construction and Degremont, the Nova Scotian-French consortium that built Halifax’s $330-million sewage treatment system, still owns the pumping station and is responsible for the cleanup. The city has not taken over the facility because of ongoing problems.
