Raylene Rankin warmly remembered

The entire province is joining the tiny Cape Breton village of Mabou in mourning the loss of a beloved member of The Rankin Family.

Raylene Rankin passed away on Sunday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Raylene, along with siblings John Morris, David, Geraldine and Genevieve formed the original Rankin Family in the 1970s performing around Cape Breton.

But it was Raylene and John Morris, with Jimmy, Cookie and Heather Rankin that rose to stardom with the 1992 release of the album “Fair Thee Well” that went platinum four times over, selling 500,000 copies.

Former Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald called Raylene Rankin a great Nova Scotian.

“The one thing about Raylene Rankin is what you see is what you got,”  said MacDonald.

MacDonald recalled the last time he met Raylene at the Rankin-owned Red Shoe Pub in Mabou.

“In her true traditional fashion, a big hug and a smile,” MacDonald told Maritime Morning host Jordi Morgan.

No details on funeral arrangements have been made public.
