Man smashes hearse with sledgehammer

Sunday morning shoppers witnessed an odd scene in a Quinpool Road shopping mall — a man on top of a hearse smashing it violently with a sledgehammer.
Police were called to the Canadian Tire parking lot around 10:40 a.m. for a public disturbance and possible property damage. The whole scene was caught on video and has been posted on YouTube.
The video shows the man, standing atop the black hearse, repeatedly pounding on the vehicle with a sledgehammer until police arrive and order him to lie face down on the pavement.
“The vehicle had apparently broken down and he was awaiting a tow truck to remove it to a salvage yard,” Sgt. Greg Robertson told News 95.7.
The man was taken into custody without incident and officers have decided not to lay charges as the vehicle was the man’s personal property.
There was however, some concern for public safety at the time of the incident.
“Anytime an action like that occurs in a public place, it was drawing attention, that was a concern,” he said.
