Two people were taken into custody after a police officer looking through a window led to the closure of one of the main roads on the Halifax Peninsula all Friday morning rush.
“An officer on patrol in the area observed what he believed to be a male armed with a weapon in the main window of a residence on Compton Avenue,” said Constable Pierre Bourdages. “The attempt to reach that male inside the residence were met with negative result. We’ve been trying to make contact with this male ever since we’ve been on scene.”
Police cited the potential presence of a gun as the reason for closing access to Robie Street along the Halifax Common from William St, near Quinpool, to Cunard, along with some of the side streets.
“Residents in the area were asked to ‘voluntary evacuate,'” said Cst. Bourdages. “We cannot force them out of their house, so some resident did choose to evacuate. Some other decided to take shelter in their house in lower level basement or away from the scene.”
The Emergency Response Team arrived on scene as officers offered to escort residents safely away from the area.
Police would not say what kind of gun was seen.
Police said early on that the person in the house was not a person of interest being sought in another case. Even so, property records suggested a connection between the address in question and Andrew Jason Hudder, wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant in connection with a shooting on Robie Street on November 3.
After 11am, police entered the home and brought out a woman in a wheelchair and a man. Both were taken into custody. Police said they were not certain of their relationship to the original weapon call.
