Oland Brewery says it’s done sponsoring HRM events

Halifax will have less beer money to pay for public events, now that Oland Brewery says it’s pulling its sponsorship.

The money may return once council puts policy on paper.

A health promoter Dan Steeves with Capital Health asked again last week, “Is it appropriate for alcohol companies to sponsor events that are primarily directed towards children?”

Oland Brewery spokesman Wade Keller says that’s not what they’re doing here.

“We do not aim our product at children, and to have people suggest otherwise is, quite simply, wrong,” said Keller on Maritime Morning. “

HRM has no alcohol sponsorship policy, nor one for fast food, coffee, or anything else someone might complain about.

“Until such a policy is put in place, we do not want to be part of a controversy around what are great events,” said Keller. “These are community events and we tried to do something good here. People are seeing a problem with that, so let’s make it easy on everyone let’s take a break and back away.”

After this weekend’s tree lighting, which is already been paid for in exchange for a slide projection showing the company logo, not a beer brand, Keller says there will be no more Oland money for HRM events.
