Former Alberta Premier, Ralph Klein, dies

Many Canadians are mourning the death of former Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, who passed away yesterday at the age of 70 after struggling with lung problems and dementia.

“Ralph Klein was a premier who knew how to not take himself too seriously, even while he treated the challenges his province faced with a seriousness of focus,” said Premier Darrell Dexter. “He was a dedicated leader who left his mark on Alberta. My thoughts are with his family, friends and the people of Alberta on this difficult day.”

Klein’s political career began over thirty years ago when he was elected Mayor of Calgary. He was re-elected multiple times before running provincially in 1989.

He was leader of Alberta’s Progressive Conservative Party for twelve years until 2006.

Klein’s family has asked the city to organize a public celebration of his life.
