The Maritimes have lost a well-known developer and community leader.
Armour Mayes McCrea passed away Tuesday at the age of 73 after a long illness.
“Ben” as he was known, formed the Armour Group in the early 1970s and was the driving force behind revitalizing the Halifax waterfront, particularly the Historic Properties.
McCrea was at the helm of a number of big projects, including the development of Founder’s Square, a project that was able to save seven pre-Confederation buildings around one of the biggest office towers in the city.
McCrea served on many different boards and committees including acting as a director of the Fundy Tidal Power Corporation, Nova Scotia Place (now the World Trade and Convention Centre), Council of Maritime Premiers Advisory Group, National Research Council of Canada Standing Committee on Building Code, Founding Director of Sacred Heart School and National Director of Ducks Unlimited Canada, Miramichi Salmon Association, and Scotia Springer Club.
He was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the Nova Scotia Association of Professional Engineers, North British Society and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.
Funeral details are expected to be released in the next few days.
