Halifax circus school soaring to new heights

Atlantic Cirque is soaring to new heights.

The circus school is expanding to meet growing demand for its classes in the Halifax area.

Atlantic Cirque President Anais Guimond told News 95.7, in addition to having a wait list for classes, the demand for birthday parties at their Burnside facility has been so high they’ve been turning parents and kids away.

“We’re trying to find a way to add more classes and have more space available for the birthday parties and the only way we can do that is if we have more room on the floor,” said Guimond.

Guimond said the school has found a way to add 1,000 square feet to its facility by moving offices up onto a second floor that doesn’t yet exist.

“Basically build a second floor, move the manager’s office, the costume room and the birthday party up in the air,” explained Guimond.

Construction is expected to wrap up by July 1, just in time for the school’s summer camps.

Guimond says circus arts has become increasingly popular with kids because they want to try something different than joining a sports team or a typical dance class.

“Just a different form of physical arts that the kids want to do. Kids always want to get involved in something different and unique and cool and the school here is not necessarily for people who want to do circus arts for a living.”

The school has seen continued growth since Guimond started it 11 years ago. Between the Halifax and Moncton, N.B., locations it now contracts 18 staff.
