Man accused of running same scam for years at Bayers Lake retailer

An investigation that started three weeks ago in Bayers Lake has uncovered years of fraud allegedly involving one man.

Here’s how it worked: a man would walk into the store empty-handed and take something off the shelf. He’d walk up to customer service and try to return the item for store credit, saying he lost his receipt.

At least once, a clerk was threatened with a pair of boots after refusing the do the transaction.

Police say this scam has been going on since 2010.

They’re charging 48-year-old Jeffrey Archibald Baker of Dartmouth with 65 counts of failing to comply with a probation order, 59 counts of fraud under $5000, six counts of attempted fraud under $5000, one count of theft, and assault with a weapon.

The Financial Crime Unit is eager to hear from any victims of similar crimes.
