Forest fire destroys homes near Moncton

COLPITTS SETTLEMENT, N.B. – A forest fire in southeastern New Brunswick has destroyed at least two homes.

Anne Bull, a spokeswoman for the provincial Department of Natural Resources, says the homes were destroyed yesterday as the fire burned in the Colpitts Settlement area.

Colpitts Settlement is about 40 kilometres west of Moncton.

As of late last night, about eight fire departments were involved in fighting the blaze, which had spread over a 500-hectare area.

Conditions have been extremely dry in the province, and a no-burn order is in effect.

Meanwhile, a reception centre was set up as a precautionary measure yesterday in Kedgwick as another, smaller fire burned.
