Ottawa brings in new measures to cut air and pollution emissions from ships

The federal government says it is bringing in stricter environmental standards to reduce air emissions from ships operating
in Canadian waters.

Transport Minister Denis Lebel says the changes continue to align Canada’s air emission standards with those in the United States as vessels routinely operate in waters that are regulated by the two countries.

The government says it expects the new emission standards to result in a nine per cent annual reduction in greenhouse gases from ships by 2025.

Lebel also announced measures to prevent pollution from ships by bringing in a new standard to manage grey water, which drains from a ship’s sinks, showers and laundry.

Under those changes, grey water discharged in Canadian waters must not include solids or cause a sheen on the water.

Grey water discharged into Arctic waters fall under another set of standards.
