First Walmart ‘Supercentre’ opens in Atlantic Canada

Walmart Canada has opened it’s first supercentre in Atlantic Canada at Halifax Shopping Centre.
The supercentres sell a full line of fresh groceries in addition to merchandise, services and select food products already available at Walmart.
Business proffessor Ed McHugh says it’s interesting Walmart chose to expand into such a low margin business as groceries.
“My sense is that it’s good for consumers,” said McHugh. “I’m not so sure it’s great for Canadian Business, but it’s good for consumers.”
The move is expected to put competitive pressure on grocery retailers such as Sobeys.
