The Nova Scotia SPCA is experiencing a cat overpopulation crisis.
The organization says there are more than 1,000 cats it can’t accommodate.
Director of animal care Sandra Flemming says it’s breeding season but there’s no one reason why so many people are dropping off cats.
“Some of them are owner-surrenders, these are people looking to re-home their pets but a lot of them this time of year are cats having litters outside in the wild and people are coming across them and are looking to bring them into our shelter,” she said.
Flemming added they aren’t about to change their no-kill policy.
“One of the things that we’re doing now on our own is our spay/neuter clinic which provides a high volume, low cost to the public and also our own organization,” she said. “These are the programs that will curb overpopulation.”
Flemming said euthanizing animals doesn’t solve the problem of pet over population, adding they need more help from the government.
