Halifax Regional Municipality is celebrating the 500 spayed cat in two years under the Spay Day HRM program.
Linda Felix created the program two years ago when she noticed a need to spay or neuter pets from low-income families.
“It’s more than I ever hoped to achieve,” said Felix. “I think it has proven that a spay program can be done here. Everybody told me it couldn’t be done, but I think I’ve proven them otherwise.”
Volunteers pick up the cats, drive them to a veterinary clinic, then return them to their owners at the end of the day. Felix also spends a lot of time fundraising to pay for the program.
“It has eliminated the birth of more than a thousand kittens into poverty and hardship,” added Felix.
The celebration of the program and Linda will take place Sunday afternoon at the Captain William Spry Centre in Spryfield from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
