Four injured in Bedford boating accident

Four people are in hospital this morning under observation after an overnight boating accident on the Bedford Basin.

Halifax Regional Police were called just after midnight when area residents heard a loud crash.

Sgt. Greg Robertson says the 31-foot fiberglass boat hit a buoy around the 600-block of the Bedford Highway, near Clearwater Seafoods.

“It appears their boat became inoperable and it appears that they believed the boat was about to sink, so at that point a couple of male parties aboard the vessel either were thrown into the water or decided to jump into the water and swim to shore while other occupants of the vessel remained on board,” explained Robertson.

The three people still on the boat were picked up by the Coast Guard and the boat was towed to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography dock on the Dartmouth side of the harbour.

Robertson says how fast the boat was going and whether it was traveling in the proper channel will make up part of their investigation.

The three men and one woman that remain in hospital are in serious, but not life-threatening condition. Another woman was treated and released.
