A local graduate student says his research indicates Statistics Canada’s definition of cyberbullying needs to be changed.
Saint Mary’s University criminology grad student Alex Moore created a pilot study as part of thesis to see whether or not Statistics Canada’s definition is accurate.
“I determined that what they’re employing, limits our ability to obtain an accurate picture of cyberbullying in Canada,” he said. “What we think we know in Canada about cyberbullying is based on information from other countries.”
He surveyed students on campus and found 31 per cent thought Stats Can’s definition of cyberbullying was relevant while 77 per cent found the definition he created accurate.
His goal is to do a provincial-wide survey similar to Statistics Canada’s national survey, using his definition and methodology.
His research comes on the heels of provincial legislation on cyberbullying, which he says based on his findings, may not end up being the best solution to the problem.
