HRM’s regional plan coming together

After lengthy discussion, HRM Council is on its way to shaping the region’s zoning plan.

Council is almost halfway through recommended changes that will eventually make-up HRM’s new 5 year plan and will tackle the remainder of recommended changes at next week’s meeting.

Council spent 4 hours slogging through recommended changes to the regional plan, approving two changes: to consult with the public on the “Road Network Functional Plan” and the apply the “Complete Communities” policy throughout HRM, not just in urban centers.

Council also requested more detail when it comes to increasing the eco-system buffer or “riparian buffer” in residential developments which was a motion seconded by Councillor Jennifer Watts.

“The issue is residential development wherever that may be and maybe it’s not just in the North West Arm,” said Watts, “I think there is a certain merit in having the flexibility for industrial development on our waterfront that we need to be able to build and have industrial development right up to the shoreline.”

A finalized version of the plan will be brought back to council in January.
