Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children settlement reached

After months of negotiations and a long history of allegations, The Chronicle Herald is reporting a settlement has been reached between former residents of the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children and the provincial government.

About 140 former residents proposed a class-action lawsuit a few years ago, but in 2012 the RCMP said there wasn’t enough evidence to support the allegations of sexual, physical and emotional abuse by staff at the orphanage.

When they pushed for a public inquiry, the NDP government pushed back, eventually reaching a $5 million settlement to prevent the lawsuit.

Last fall when Stephen McNeil was elected, he promised he’d look into the matter and so far, has kept his word.

Negotiations reignited in December with the Liberals and a settlement has finally been reached.

The amount of the deal, expected to be in the millions, should be made public early next week.
