Suspected drunk driver knocks out power on the peninsula

Halifax Police cleared the scene overnight, but thousands of people still felt the effects of a car crash early this morning.

Sgt. Christina Martin said at 12:30 a.m.,  a suspected impaired driver hit two power poles in the city’s south end, causing a mass power outage across the peninsula.

“In relation to the vehicle involved in the accident, it was travelling north on Beaufort Avenue towards Oxford Street when it struck a power pole on the west side of the roadway, causing damage to that power pole,” she said. “The vehicle continued to travel north on Beaufort Avenue, striking another power pole at the intersection of Oxford Street and South Street.”

According to Nova Scotia Power’s website, customers from the Armdale rotary all the way  to Barrington Street were affected, including thousands of people on Bayers Road, Robie Street and almost all of Halifax’s south end.

Martin said a 19-year-old man will be appearing in court at a later date to face charges for impaired driving.

She said there were six people in the car at the time of the accident, and added that nobody was hurt.

“They were all assessed by EHS and there were no injuries that required any hospital treatment.”

NSP crews are working to have the power restored for customers this morning.
