Investigation continues after third-storey balcony collapses, injures six

Halifax Regional Police are still investigating the accident that sent six students to hospital after a balcony collapsed at a south-end apartment early Saturday morning.

Sgt. Nancy Rudback said they arrived to the Brussels St. apartment at 1:45 a.m. where a third-storey deck ripped out of the building and crashed down, injuring people both on the balcony and below it.

“There were multiple calls form the residents, as well as the surrounding residents, in relation to a third-storey deck that fell, and subsequently landed on the lower deck. There were people both on the upper deck and the lower deck, as well as the backyard.”

She said six people — all in their early 20s — were sent to the hospital with serious injuries, but they have since been released from hospital.

Rudback said the property owner was contacted, but she couldn’t comment on details of the investigation.

“The property owner was located and was interviewed,” she said. “I’m not involved in the investigation. It is ongoing, so I’m not sure exactly what direction it’s heading in at this point.”

It’s not known yet if any charges will be laid.

A mother of one of the injured students told the Chronicle Herald both the city and property owners need to take better care of the students that live in their houses.

She said she’s not ruling out a lawsuit at this point.

Just last September, a balcony collapsed in Dartmouth, sending 15 people to hospital with injuries.
