The Sambro Island Lighthouse Heritage Society is offering tours to the historic structure Saturday.
Vice president Joe Flemming told NEWS 95.7 his organization recently secured a licence to use the island.
“To start to put some infrastructure in place, not permanent infrastructure, but some stuff to start running these tours on a more regular basis,” he said.
The tours will start 10 a.m. and for safety reasons, only children over 8 will be allowed to go.
“Our plan is to have the boat leave with the first boat load of tourists to go out there to the island, and the last boat coming off the island won’t be until about 3:30 in the afternoon,” he said.
The boats will depart from Sambro Government Wharf, where tickets will be sold for the tours.
Landing on the island is ‘weather permitting’, if the captain decides docking isn’t possible, passengers will be taken on a tour around the island.
Recently, the federal government announced $1.5-million in funding for the historic lighthouse over the next two years for renovations.
The structure at the entrance of Halifax Harbour is considered the oldest operating lighthouse in the Americas.
