DARTMOUTH – Windmill Road was closed at Springhill Road in Dartmouth for several hours Friday afternoon after Halifax Fire and Emergency Crews responded to a fire at a sub-divided home that also contained an auto-related business.
Crews arrived to the one-and-a-half storey home at 333 Windmill Road within minutes of getting the call just before 1 o’clock and began extinguishing the blaze which was concentrated behind the adjoining business.
Fire division commander Chuck Bezanson spoke to NEWS 95.7 from the scene Friday, saying it didn’t take long for fire-fighters to get things under control.
“They made a really good quick hit on the fire and extinguished it fairly quickly, and overhaul it quickly so it looks like they were able to save mos of the structure, ” Bezanson said.
Bezanson says most of damage to the residential apartment located at the back of the building but says an early estimate put the total damage around $100,000.
Residents were not home at the time, and there were no injuries, but Bezanson confirmed that two cats were successfully rescued and taken to a local vet.
Friday’s fire did displace a family of seven, a couple and five children – ranging in age from 4 to 14 who according to the Canadian Red Cross are all now staying with a relative. The Red Cross also arranged emergency purchases like clothing and food, and provided blankets and other essentials.
There was no word Friday afternoon on what causes the fire.
