HALIFAX – Residents are being asked no to swim in, drink from, or eat fish caught in Powder Mill Lake near Waverley because of a probable blue-green algae bloom.
The province’s Department of the Environment says while the health risk is low, residents or visitors should still not drink or use it to prepare or cook food because of toxins from the blue-green algae that cannot be eliminated through boiling.
Those who do come into contact with the toxins can expect skin and eye irritation and possible nausea, and should contact a doctor if symptoms persist for more than a few days.
Pets and other animals should also not drink or swim in the water.
