De Jonge and Orton advance to kayak finals

A chance to win some hardware for a couple of local kayakers.

It was a photo finish as Halifax’s Mark de Jonge as he qualified for the K-1 200 metre finals.

He finished fourth with a time of 34.775, slightly ahead of Serbia’s fifth place finisher Marko Novakovic who clocked in at 34.778.

And Lake Echo’s Genevieve Orton and the rest of her team tied Great Britain for second place in their K-4 500 metre semi-final to move on to the finals.

Both teams clocked in at 1:36.254.

The finals for both events go Saturday morning, with de Jonge’s shot at a medal scheduled to go at 9:07 a.m., Orton’s team’s chance at the podium is at 9:47 a.m.
