Lobster pound in Eastern Passage destroyed by fire

HALIFAX – A lobster pound at Government Wharf in Eastern Passage was destroyed by a massive fire Wednesday night.

Halifax Fire Division Commander Brad Connors said crews were called to Capital Seafood on Government Wharf Road just before 9:30 p.m., where the roof of the roughly 50 foot by 100 foot structure was fully engulfed in flames.

“About two hours we had it under control and stopped the spread of fire…right now we’re just in the process of putting out the hotspots,” Connors said, with an excavator expected to help firefighters later Thursday morning.

“Basically we have to wait until daylight and we’ve got to bring an excavator to get at the seed of the fire,” he said. “When the building collapses it creates sort of pockets of fire that we can’t get at without an excavator.”

No one was hurt in the fire and the cause is not yet known, with fire investigators expected on the scene Thursday morning.

It’s not yet known how this will effect the lobster season for the business, as some reports indicate it employs between 20 and 30 people.
