QUEBEC – A Quebec City hospital says two men who were injured in a deadly mosque attack are still in critical condition, but two others have been stabilized.
Six men were killed and 19 others injured after a gunman opened fire on worshippers at a mosque in Quebec City on Sunday night.
On Monday, five of the injured remained in hospital, two of them in critical condition.
On Tuesday morning, a spokesman for the CHU de Quebec_Universite Laval says one patient has been released, while four remain in hospital.
A 27-year-old university student, Alexandre Bissonnette, has been charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called “a terrorist act.”
Police have offered no information on what they believe motivated Sunday’s shooting at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec.
Couillard says Quebec has its ‘demons’ but is an open and loving society
Premier Philippe Couillard says Quebec has its “demons” but is generally an open and accepting society.
Couillard acknowledges there are xenophobic, racist and exclusionary elements in the province but rejects suggestions the deadly shooting at a Quebec City mosque is an indication Quebec has failed in its attempt to be an open society.
Asked this morning whether the atmosphere is more insidious in Quebec than elsewhere, Couillard replied that it is different in every community.
He urged Quebecers to work together and to continue expressing solidarity with the Muslim community.
Marine Le Pen calls Quebec mosque shooting ‘deplorable’
A French far-right party whose leader’s anti-Muslim views were apparently shared by the man accused of killing six people at a Quebec City mosque is calling the mass shooting “deplorable.”
Bissonnette was a fan of Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Front in France, according to his Facebook account.
Le Pen is known for her anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant positions and has won the endorsement and admiration of white supremacists.
When asked about Bissonnette’s support for Le Pen, a spokesman for her party said Monday the French politician should not have to apologize for comments people make on their private Facebook pages.
