Much of Halifax becomes no-fly zone for recreational drones

By Connor Fraser

HALIFAX – New drone regulations across Canada effective immediately make the majority of Halifax and Dartmouth a no-fly zone.

Recreational flyers will face a fine up to $3,000 if drones are caught flying.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced yesterday the previous no-fly zone guild lines have turned into enforceable laws for those who fly drones that weigh more than 250g up to 35kg.

Some of these restrictions include being unable to fly:

  •  higher than 90 metres
  •  at night
  •  within 75 metres of buildings, vehicles or people
  •  without contact information marked on the drone itself
  •  and within nine kilometres from where an aircraft can take off or land.

“On the peninsula and in through Dartmouth, [Halifax] pretty much becomes a no-fly zone regardless of those restrictions because it’s controlled airspace because it’s near helipad air-zones,” said Mark Langille, a partner at the aviation blog Flitelab. “Basically there’s no flight allowed within that.”

The restrictions still apply everywhere across Canada.

Langille says that he believes some level of restriction was needed and he saw it coming, but recreational flyers are very limited.
