Two individuals have been arrested for allegedly importing heroin into Halifax.
Nova Scotia RCMP’s Federal Serious and Organized Crime Section worked with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on an investigation that began in montreal.
On June 21, CBSA officers in Montreal found a package containing what was believed to be heroin. The drugs were concealed in children’s backpacks, lunch bags and spools of fabric. Officers notified RCMP in Nova Scotia that the package was destined for Halifax.
RCMP said the investigation determined a second package was also on its way.
The first package arrived at a Halifax address on June 23 with the second arriving three days later.
There was an estimated 6.5 kilograms of heroin between the two packages.
On June 27, a man and woman picked up what was believed to be the two packages from the Halifax address. RCMP arrested the pair in a nearby parking area.
Upon further investigation officers determined the heroin may also have come in contact with carfentanil and methylfentanyl.
22-year-old Mithusha Poobalasingam and 37-year-old Geevan Nagendran both of Toronto, Ontario have each been charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, three counts of importation of a controlled substance and false representation of a Canadian aviation document.
