Case of Hammonds Plains man heading to country’s highest court

HALIFAX – The case of a Hammonds Plains man whose conviction was overturned after being found guilty of killing his girlfriend and burning her body is heading to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Paul Trevor Calnen was convicted in 2015 of second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend Reita Jordan in Timberlea two years earlier.

The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal overturned Calnen’s conviction and ordered a new trial last month, also ruling the trial should be on the lesser charge of manslaughter.

The Public Prosecution Service confirms to NEWS 95.7 it is appealing that decision to Canada’s highest court and plans to file a notice of appeal with the court before the Aug. 14 deadline.
