HALIFAX – With Halifax Regional School Board classes starting up Thursday, parents and students might notice some changes to some bus routes.
HRSB spokesperson Doug Hadley says the changes will mean that some students may not be guaranteed a seat on the bus.
Some changes have been made to bus routes to ensure students arrive within the supervisory period, which is 20 minutes before school starts.
Hadley tells NEWS 95.7 one of the bigger changes that will impact elementary school students, is that dismissal times have been combined.
“We know this is going to have an impact on bus schedules and bus routing, and we just want people to double check before school starts that they have the proper route,” said Hadley. “But more importantly, there are lots of people who have received courtesy bussing in the past, which means there’s a seat for them to get on the bus if there’s room. That might not be there.”
Concerns have been raised among some parents over busing for P-6 students who live within the 2.4 kilometer school range, as they do not qualify for bussing.
Hadley says the board sympathises with parents, but adds there is only so much the school board can do, as there is not enough funding to allow students within the walk zone to be picked up.
He recommends parents or guardians double check bus schedules on the HRSB websites, or to call Stock Transportation if they have any concerns.
