Two horses dead, others showing botulism symptoms at animal rescue

CHESTER, N.S. – Two horses at a Nova Scotia animal rescue have died of botulism with others in the stable showing symptoms of the disease.
Integrity's Haven Equine Rescue Centre is a farm in Chester Basin that takes in horses in need of a home.
Its owner Angela Welburn says botulism is a deadly bacteria contracted by horses through contaminated hay.
She told the Rick Howe Show the third horse diagnosed with botulism seems to be fighting it off.
“She still can't swallow but she's very interested in her water and she is into her grain bucket,” she said. “The main thing is that she isn't worse.”
Welburn's vet was expected to check on two other horses Wednesday that she says are showing symptoms.
Welburn says she wishes she would have had the horses vaccinated.
