Hurricane Chris intensifies in Atlantic, takes aim at Avalon Peninsula

Hurricane Chris was upgraded to a category two storm on Wednesday morning as it picked up speed in the direction of Atlantic Canada.
According to Environment Canada update on Wednesday morning, the storm was still forecasted to pass well south of Nova Scotia on Thursday. The province will likely see little more than some rough surf, with a possibility of heavy rain on the Eastern Shore and into Cape Breton.
The American-based National Hurricane Centre said Chris had maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h on Wednesday morning. The storm was expected to strengthen slightly before weakening into a strong post-tropical cyclone as it approaches Newfoundland.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for parts of Newfoundland, warning of strong winds, heavy rain and pounding surf on Thursday.
