HRM wants input on Cogswell District’s public spaces and building design

NEWS RELEASE
HALIFAX REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY
*************************

The Halifax Regional Municipality has launched a new video and online tools to encourage public input on two important aspects of the Cogswell District: public spaces and urban design rules for new buildings.

Feedback on public spaces will be used in the completion of the 90% design. Insights regarding urban design rules will help inform next steps with future engagement for municipal land use policy associated with Cogswell District. The 90% design is targeted for completion by December 2018, with work on land use policy extending into 2019.

Residents are asked to participate in-person at one of our pop-up sessions, or online by visiting Shape Your City to contribute to an interactive engagement map and/or filling out a short questionnaire.

Remaining public engagement pop-up sessions will be held on the following dates:

In addition to visiting pop-ups, residents can also participate in a unique engagement process – a design charrette, scheduled for Sept. 24, 25, 26 and 28. Unlike an open house or engagement pop-up, the design charrette is a series of detailed workshops, held over multiple days, focused on specific elements of the plan. Together the diverse perspectives of community members and stakeholders will shape design solutions for public spaces and land use policy. Details regarding the design charrette and how to register for participation, will be released soon.

The Cogswell District is one of the biggest city-building projects in the history of Halifax. A new neighbourhood will soon be built – where the Cogswell Interchange now stands – designed to connect downtown with the north end and waterfront, creating a stronger, more inclusive network of communities.

On June 5, 2018, Regional Council approved the 60% design of the Cogswell District and gave direction to move to the next stage of the process – completing the 90% design. To inform this next milestone, Council requested a collaborative public engagement initiative to inform the final design of public spaces and detailed land use policy for the Cogswell District.
