Volunteers to cleanup shores of Point Pleasant Park Saturday

Volunteers will head to Point Pleasant Park on Saturday for the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Celebration.

Since 2010, 14 cleanups at the park have resulted in the removal of 434kg of trash.

Organizer Anna Weinstein with the Clean Foundation said the event it open to everyone.

“Obviously Point Pleasant Park is a such a special place for so many people,” she told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show. “People who really feel connected, or don't but just want to come out for a beautiful morning, are welcome to help keep it clean.”

The event is part of International Coastal Cleanup Day. 

Weinstein said it's difficult to live in this world without creating waste of some sort, and unfortunately, some of it ends up in the ocean.

“It's really important that each of us does everything that we can do to help catch it before it breaks down into smaller pieces of plastic that can get eaten by animals or can obstruct our waterways,” Weinstein explained. “The ocean is such an important resource, especially here in Nova Scotia, so we've got to do our part.”

As lunch is provided, those interested are asked to pre-register online. People can also show up and register at the park starting at 9:30 a.m., then the cleanup goes from 10 a.m. to noon.

The group will be meeting at the picnic area across from Black Rock Beach.

All supplies will be provided but volunteers are asked to bring a reusable water bottle.
