Halifax’s online map of designated smoking areas goes live (update)

Haligonians can now start checking an online map to find the locations where they'll be able to light up on municipal property next week.

On Monday, bylaw amendments kick in banning the smoking or vaping of tobacco and cannabis on municipal property, with the exception of designated smoking areas (DSAs).

Only one DSA had been identified as of Friday evening. It's at the Dartmouth Bridge Terminal on Nantucket Ave.

It appears that crews from Halifax Regional Municipality will be spending the weekend installing designated smoking areas.

“Approximately 10 pre-identified locations are being assessed onsite, over the weekend, and installations will occur by Oct. 15, where viable,” said the municipality on halifax.ca before the map was taken down.

HRM said they are still going through applications for DSAs and will keep the map updated when new ones are approved and installed.

They'll also be monitoring the designated locations to make sure they work as planned.

“This may result in the removal/ relocation of some DSAs,” they said.

The map briefly went live after 4 p.m. before being taken down again. As of 6:35 p.m. it was back online.
