Adsum for Women and Children says, because of the sudden drop in temperature, they’re in desperate need of winter clothing.
The organization, which provides shelter for homeless women, families, youth and transgender individuals, operates a clothing room where those in need can grab donated items.
“We’ve had a real shortage of winter coats, particularly for women, as well as winter footwear,” said communications officer Kathy McNab.
She’s hoping Haligonians dig through their closets and bring in those coats and boots that haven’t been worn in a year or two.
“We serve a lot of people who are experiencing homelessness as well as people who are new to the community, new refugees etcetera, who don’t have any winter clothing.”
Adsum can see as many as 40 people a day looking for donated items for themselves or their families.
“The demand is huge for people who are no longer affording housing in our city, taking their weekly budget and putting it toward rent,” McNab said. “They just don’t have the money to spend on things like clothing and their food budget like they used to.”
Items can be dropped off any time of day at 2421 Brunswick St.
Adsum’s clothing room is open Monday through Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.
The organization is also starting to collect items ahead of Christmas for the as many as 300 women and children they will help over the holidays.
“We’re looking for new and unwrapped toys, we’re looking for pajamas and underwear, as well as personal care items from makeup, to tampons, shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste and all of those things.”
