Albanian students demand cut in tuition fees

TIRANA, Albania — Thousands of students of Albanian public universities are protesting to demand lower annual tuition fees.
Students on Wednesday blocked for the second day a main road in the capital, Tirana, protesting in front of the Education Ministry. They said they would boycott school until their demands were accepted.
Protests are taking place in other cities, too.
Students want to cut in half the annual charge of 20,000 to 320,000 leks ($180-$2,915) and also cancel a double payment when exams are repeated.
The government says there have been no increases, adding that the fees are set by the universities themselves, which are partially self-supporting.
