High 104 twinning project awaiting environmental approval

By Matthew Moore

The next step in twinning Highway 104 between New Glasgow and Antigonish has been completed, as the province has requested environmental approval.

The proposal, which was submitted on Thursday highlights the project, stating it'll be a 38 kilometre project altogether.

The project highlights a number of Valued Environmental Components (VEC's), including decreased air quality, with increased noise levels, direct or indirect effects on aquatic and terrestrial habitats and possible modifications to lands owned by the Mi'kmaq.

The project lists concerns for foreseeable loss of Mi'Kmaq traditional use sites and the loss of plant species. A Mi'Kmaq Ecological Knowledge Study is underway to address these concerns.

The public can submit comments on the project until January 15, 2019. The Environment Minister must make a decision whether to approve the project by Feb. 4, 2019.
