HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii — Hawaii emergency crews have rescued a man who fell 60 to 70 feet at a volcano crater.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Hawaii Volcanoes National Park rangers and Hawaii Island fire crews rescued the man Wednesday night at Kilauea volcano’s Halemaumau crater on the Big Island.

The man, who was not named and is in his 30s, climbed over a metal railing at the Steaming Bluff overlook before falling from a 300-foot cliff.

Park officials say a visitor reported the fall around 6:30 p.m.

The man was found around 9 p.m. seriously injured on a narrow ledge about 70 feet from the edge.

Officials say emergency personnel completed a “high-angle extrication” of the man, who was in critical condition, before airlifting him by military helicopter to Hilo Medical Center.
